When Mercury is nearest the Earth, it
appears from here to
reverse in motion, traveling backward or
“retrograde” for about three weeks. Influencing our mental processes, communication and
transportation, the retrograde motion of Mercury reflects these
affairs.
Mercury's
next retrograde period begins September 23rd, when Mercury stations at 22º
Libra. It moves back to 7º Libra, from where it resumes direct motion on
October 15th.
As Mercury slows down in direct motion,
ready to make a “station” before backing up, the smooth flow of
communication begins to fade. We determinedly press on.
While Mercury is retrograde, delays are to
be expected. The usual channels of communication become scrambled, devices used
for communication are faulty, contacts one needs to make are impossible, etc.
Mercury's retrograde periods have more effects as we become more sophisticated
in our communications technology.
The best way to use Mercury’s retrograde
period is to review, research and reevaluate. That’s mostly what is being
accomplished anyway. As a matter of fact, Mercury’s retrograde period is
really a period of opportunity to re-think, re-construct and re-define ideas or
projects. Remaining versatile, a talent of Mercury, enables one to continue
making progress – it may just not be according to the schedule we'd like to
have met.
It’s usually recommended to hold off on
putting final decisions into effect until after Mercury has returned to direct
motion. Until then, things are just too "iffy" or there is one strand
of missing information that could change everything. This is more important if papers need to be signed or if there is a
contract. Errors are likely and likely to be missed. Agreements made now may
later turn out to be unclear or inadequate. Work done during Mercury’s
retrograde period usually turns out to be incomplete or there are other
consequences. This includes repair work, surgery, or jobs that we push through
in spite of caution signs along the way.
If implementing a decision would normally be
followed by a delay factor anyway, it is appropriate to carry on, but do check
all the paperwork thoroughly first. Once Mercury returns to direct motion, the
lines of communication once again open up. The previous problems can be
resolved, plans can be carried out and all is well. If
you note it carefully, you’ll probably find that you actually accomplished
some useful “homework” during Mercury’s retrograde period; plenty of fuel
for exceptional progress once it turns direct.
If, during Mercury’s retrograde cycle, it contacts a planet in your
horoscope, there may be a special opportunity for you to benefit by observing
Mercury’s retrograde cycle. Some issue in particular may be the subject for
your review. If it is a retrograde station, there may seem to be a more or less
debilitating effect and something specific is in need of review; if a direct station, the effect is usually very
positive with a strong surge of progress and opening doors. Link
to the Planets for more on each.
Also check the house of your horoscope where
Mercury spends its retrograde period. When all is said and done, better solutions
may be revealed for those affairs.
Mercury,
as the “messenger” is also the prankster. Like a child, he thinks it's quite
funny to pull over a good joke on an adult.
Mercury's
last retrograde period began May 26, 2008, when it stationed at 21º
Gemini. It moved back to 12º Gemini, and from there it resumed direct motion on
June 19th. Link to Lunations to
read the most recent New Moon report.
If
you were born during the retrograde motion of Mercury, things may move along better than
ever for you personally with Mercury retrograde, while everyone around you is having difficulties.

Chiron
± The
Wounded Healer by Celeste Teal
Frequently referred to as
the wounded healer, the mythology surrounding Chiron present him as a wise man,
a great astrologer, a teacher and sacred warrior; one who initiates healers. The very day of Chiron’s discovery, November 1st, 1977, is
revealing of its nature. November 1st is Hallow Mass in the Celtic calendar, the
day when the veil between the worlds is lifted. Of course Chiron had been
orbiting between Saturn and Uranus before its discovery; bringing out healing
skills and mystical powers of the selected few. Now, it is we who experience
Chiron’s transits with full knowledge of his manner of teaching who can
benefit to the fullest.
Chiron,
who spends longer in some signs than others, due to an elliptical orbit,
was discovered at a time when alternative healing, channeling, ESP and similar
teachings were causing a sensation. Chiron rules such things as divination,
crystals and healing of the body/mind. In fact, Chiron is about healing the
split between body and spirit. Associated with various forms of awakening,
whether Reiki, Kundalini or the decent of the spirit of God, for its small size,
Chiron packs a punch as powerful as Pluto, but with Chiron it’s about
consciousness expanding and it feels like an initiation because some of the
things you become conscious of will at first stop you in your tracks.
Confronting painful issues is necessarily part of the Chirotic process.
Because
Chiron is reflective of the wound we’re here to heal, it also shows how we
choose to avoid dealing with our pain. The sign and house position of Chiron
tells where and with whom our wounding centers, while the aspects add to that
and show how we cover up the wound or push it out of sight. The pain associated
with Chiron can take many forms; from living with a wounded parent to a
traumatic separation. Chiron’s placement also shows our greatest gift to
share, where we can bring the most healing to others. This gift may lie dormant
until we confront our own wound. Like other outer planets, Chiron’s natal
prominence and configurations reflect an individual’s sensitivity to transits.
The most powerful aspects of Chiron is the transiting square, opposition and
conjunction to its natal position. (More about aspects
in the tutorial).
How will you know if you’re having a Chiron transit?
You’ll be having pangs in your stomach at the same time you’re realizing
there’s not one thing “out there” that can take them away.
Not you’re favorite comfort food or your most appealing addiction.
Chiron transits may coincide with a series of painful events where we must go
inwardly and through intense pain to get to the other side. Recognition of
sudden truths can bring deep anguish but through that doorway is divine
knowledge.
Chiron
asks that we accept here and now as all there is. This is it. Where once we
believed that to attain spiritual enlightenment we should be mindfully focused
“out there” or “up there” somewhere, we find with Chiron that we must be
grounded and centered in the here and now to become an effective channel for
personal enlightenment.
Chiron is deep; there are many dimensions to his teachings
and when he becomes active, your dreams may take on new dimensions, becoming
particularly symbolic, particularly lucid, and often futuristic. That’s
because his communications are saturated with meaning; it takes a form of super
communication to capture the essence.

Remember, first of all, that if you’re interested
in forecasting trends or events from a personal horoscope, you really must apply some traditional
astrology concepts. With our new age search for the psychological and spiritual
implications of planets we hesitate to apply terms such as malefic or benefic,
but to toss these descriptive images altogether decreases the ability to
pinpoint probable events.
Actually, if one can target the most likely
physical or earth plane manifestation shown in the aspects, it helps
tremendously in knowing where to apply a remedy. Left to their own, the combined
planetary energies have a “tendency” to work out in a way that allows them
the most expression. However, this isn’t always desirable and since each
aspect contains multiple potentials, with some conscious direction, one can get
more mileage out of one aspect and corral another. If a problem area is located,
you can pull out all the tools and put them to work. An illness can be
circumvented or an accident avoided by applying the proper antidote to the root
of a problem.
The simple truth is that a majority of stressful aspects
or aspects involving malefic planets in the progressed chart shows a time of
challenge while a majority of benefic planetary configurations show a relatively easy period.
For any specific time period, there won’t be more than a
handful of “active” aspects in the progressed chart. Each of these describes
part of the current picture and each must be considered against the remaining
aspects to find the major overall theme for the time period.
To begin, using Win Star
Plus or a program with similar
capabilities, run a three-wheel chart with the natal chart in the center, the
secondary progressions in the middle wheel and transits in the outer wheel. I
prefer the Tri-Small Wheel because the precise positions of the planets are
shown, making it easy to locate aspects that are forming or are within orb. Set preferences for the
Tropical zodiac and Placidus house system.
The “active” aspects are those that have formed among
the natal and progressed planets within a one-degree orb; slightly more for the
Sun and Moon. Aspects that have formed involving the angles are highest priority
and most significant of eventful times approaching.
Find major aspects to the natal Ascendant
from progressed planets that are within a one-degree orb. If it is the Sun or
Moon, give a one and a half degree orb. Make a note of it. Do the same with the
natal Midheaven. Then go to the progressed Ascendant and check for aspects it
makes to planets in the natal chart OR to planets in the progressed chart. Not
finding a whole lot, right? Ok, do the same with the progressed Midheaven.
These angular aspects show important crossroads, with hard aspects more indicative of major
changes and activity than easy
aspects.
Now, do any of those aspects involve the Sun? If so, that
is emphasizing an active and important trend. Which planets are in aspect to the angles? Is it
the natal chart ruler or an important planet from the nativity? Which natal
house does it rule? Put this in parenthesis because when a house ruler becomes
active, it means activity involving the issues of that house are coming due.
Finally, what does that active planet say in terms of tradition? For example,
which would you rather have; an active Venus or an active Mars? If you were
planning a wedding, Venus is great but if you wanted to start a new venture,
Mars is a must. At worst, Venus is indulgent and Mars is selfish. Venus is
looking for social times and Mars is looking for competition. Venus signifies
women’s affairs, Mars shows masculine interests.
Before going on, you must keep in mind that for any
significant event to unfold, the aspects must suggest it at least three times.
This is for good or bad. For major events, the aspects will point to it in many
ways. For example, if progressed Venus were conjunct the progressed Midheaven
while in trine to natal Mars, both of those aspects are highlighting romantic possibilities. If the
ruler of the fifth house also came prominently into view and you're single, you can just about bet
on it! A transit would then show when.
In judging the angular aspects, if it is the Midheaven involved
in the aspects, the indications are of a Solar nature. The event is likely to be
related to self-esteem, character, honor and career goals, similar to the Sun.
Here, one is thrown into the limelight.
If it is the Ascendant involved in aspects, there’s a more lunar theme
and events are more likely to be personal in nature, with an accent on home and
family matters.
Go next to the Sun, first the natal Sun and find aspects to
the progressed planets. Then to the progressed Sun and find aspects it forms to
either a natal or a progressed planet. These are dynamic aspects for eventful
times. The Sun is always active when major events are forthcoming and it could be a
time to make your mark upon the world!
Continue to note aspects of any remaining planets, going
next to the natal chart ruler. The progressed Moon aspects are quite transitory,
lasting only about three months. As an indicator of fluctuations
in the domicile and environment, especially as these modify and influence
personal affairs due to changes in perceptions, these furnish a lot of detail to your reading
when viewed in light of the rest of the aspects.
Now, bring in the transits starting with Pluto. Is it making a close contact to any of the
activated points or planets? Don’t
forget that if a planet comes into an active progressed aspect, both its natal
and progressed positions become hot spots for transits.
At this point, check the relationship of transiting Saturn
to the progressed Sun. This is an important indicator and may substantiate your findings
already. While looking at transiting Saturn, also
check the aspectual relationship it holds to the progressed Moon. With Saturn,
the easy relationships to the lights show times of great forward strides in
business or in a material way and the hard aspects show challenge. It's also a
good idea to check the relationship of transiting Uranus to the progressed
luminaries for Uranus may bring a sudden disruption.
Go through the
outer planets down to Jupiter and then see what area of the chart the transiting
North Node highlights as it tends to magnify activity suggested by a planet as
it crosses over. You can use the key
sheets found in the Astrologer's
Toolkit in the Tutorial.
Use simple keywords for the planets and aspects and jot down your
impressions as they come to you. Taking a
stab at forecasting will often give you some surprising results and practice
helps. Ask these questions; What kind of aspect comes up most often and which
planet comes up most often? Is the ruler of one particular house exceptionally
active?
Remember that each planet signifies more than just one
thing; for example, the Sun rules vitality as well as life purpose, so aspects
it forms points to both health and passion for life. It also shows how things
are going with the important masculine figures in your life, including your dad
and your husband if you are a woman. Learn
more about the function of the Sun
at Astrology Novice.
Also remember that this is a forecast - an outlook based on the
current configurations and evidence. Your accuracy will steadily improve and the final say as to whether
you are on the right track will be
found in the center of your wheel, in the natal chart. If an event is to come to
pass, it must be suggested there among the configurations. Transiting Sun or Mars will
often act as the event timer.

If
you've followed the above steps in Forecasting Tips,
you have your chart in front of you and know the outstanding themes in your life
as shown in the progressions.
Now,
use asterisks to mark where eclipses are falling in your chart. Eclipses are a
prelude to important events and by house
position indicate where change is coming due. While eclipses can be relied upon
to point to areas of change regardless of other techniques, they often
corroborate the findings in the progressions, providing more clarity.
Recent & Coming Eclipses:
Lunar Eclipse, August
28, 2007 at 5º Pisces
Solar
Eclipse, September 11, 2007 at 18º Virgo
Solar Eclipse, February 6, 2008 at
17º Aquarius
Lunar Eclipse, February 20, 2008
at 1º Virgo
Solar Eclipse, August 1, 2008 at
9º Leo
Lunar Eclipse, August 16, 2008 at
24º Aquarius
If
an eclipse falls within 3º of a planet or important point in your
chart, by conjunction or opposition, it is of special personal significance and
there are experiences ahead that are in keeping with the nature of that planet.
Check the keyword symbolism of the
planet to learn the issues or people it describes. For example, Venus is
naturally associated with the Second House of finances but this planet also
rules loved ones. The Sun rules your physical vitality but it also symbolizes
the important men in your life, especially the father. Sometimes an eclipse
brings a focus to some matter that has been crying for attention as it's been
neglected or a situation has gone on too long. An eclipse brings a turning
point.
An
eclipse falling on a planet magnifies the planet potential and sensitizes it to
transits. Events symbolized by the eclipse may come about three months
following the eclipse, at the first square of the Sun and still more processes
connected to the eclipse will often transpire when Mars transits by conjunction
or opposition. Either of these can usher in events related to the eclipse, with
Mars frequently bringing a necessary conflict.
Saturn
brings completion and if it's closing aspect to the eclipse degree (conjunction
or opposition), comes within three and a half years, there can be immense
progress and accomplishments made in a short time in the area brought to light
by the eclipse. This is a special "window of opportunity" to take
command of a situation. .
For
a Solar Eclipse, if it doesn't actually fall in conjunction or opposition of any
of your planets, check the last planet in your natal chart that the Sun passed
over. This is the nearest planet going clockwise in the chart from the place of
the eclipse. That planet will give you a clue to the nature of experiences
coming due.
For
example, the last contact to the Sun may call for a crucial decision and
contacts with important people. A last contact to Moon signifies issues with
women or changing conditions that could provoke an emotional response. With
Mercury, correspondence or travel may be required or if over Venus, artistic or
social pursuits come into focus.
If
the last contact was to Mars, a conflict of some sort is likely so be sure to
vent these energies into physical activity so as not to become accident-prone.
With Jupiter, the possibilities are endless but careful not to go overboard in
your current optimistic frame of mind. Of course Saturn reminds you of the need
to work hard and requires a period of increased responsibility.
If
the Sun's last pass was over Uranus, things are rather unpredictable so prepare
to be flexible in regard to matters symbolized by the house
where the eclipse falls. With Neptune, confusing elements and uncertainties
require waiting before putting plans into action. Finally, Pluto suggests
persistent efforts to improve a situation.
Combined
with the house position, the preceding
hints may be used to explore the possibilities as indicated by the nature of the
planet contacted.
Eclipses
are often labeled as undesirable because they sometimes appear to provoke a
crisis, but they are really a gift from the cosmos, showing where a more healthy
state of affairs will evolve. Watch for the release of my new book, Eclipses,
Predicting World Events & Personal Transformation to learn of the many fascinating elements of an eclipse and just how to know
what each one means for you. Best wishes, Celeste Teal

Question: I am not clear about the
strength of transiting nodes. Planets are emphasized more. How does one evaluate
nodal transits; i.e., with what level of strength? BTW, I've really enjoyed your
website! A.O.
Answer: Hi and thanks for writing. I'm
glad you're enjoying the website.
This is a good question you have about the transiting nodes. Of course you
probably know that it is the conjunction and opposition aspects to natal planets
that are important. The transiting nodes over a planet does emphasize the nature
of the planet - I see it as a sort of exclamation point, bringing about
experiences, situations, conditions and feelings associated with the particular
planet - even showing an emphasis on the people in your life that are ruled by
the planet (Sun: father, Moon: mother, Mercury: siblings, etc., etc.).
The North Node, also called the Dragon's Head, is associated with fresh incoming
energy that amplifies the way the aspected planet manifests. It often turns up
the volume on the urge to bring more into the life of a material or tangible
sort. Depending on the condition of the planet, this energy can be very
positively directed, or there can be distortion in the way the planet responds
to the nodal stimulation - it may become greedy or grasping.
The South Node is associated with a drawing out force, asking something of
us; a time to give back. Its effect and the way it sensitizes a planet is more
intangible and timeless, urging continuity and requiring selfless and
compassionate actions. When experienced negatively, one may feel weak or
insecure; as if one's power and energy is leaking. This can result in making
drastic or desperate decisions that could have severe repercussions later on.
To give a brief example of this phenomenon, Martha Stewart experienced a
powerful South Node eclipse prior to her fall from grace for suspected insider
trading activities. The eclipse fell on her Moon, representative of her public
popularity, while it also fell opposite her progressed Jupiter, representing her
financial wealth. It is likely that a sense of losing control contributed to
some uncharacteristic judgment calls. But from this example, one can see how the
South Node, also called the Dragon's Tail, became associated with sacrifice and
vulnerability.
But, there is even more to it than that. Similar to the effects and impact of an
eclipse, the transits of the nodes over a planet tend to keep one firmly planted
upon the divine path that was chosen for this lifetime - like a guidepost. The
transiting nodes over a planet represent points of Karmic interchange.
In his book, Lunar
Nodes, Mohan Koparker says that when the destined nodes are making
significant aspects, the free will existence is at its minimum. He goes on to
say that a person has nothing to worry about as far as making decisions at this
time since the decisions are made for that person according to what is best in
the long run. A person is brought back to his/her normal pattern of destiny
through these nodal connections. This is also true of eclipses.
The level of strength of the nodal transit may be dependant upon various
factors, including the condition and prominence of the natal or progressed
planet receiving the transit as well as our previous actions and how closely
we've stayed upon our predetermined path or strayed from it.
I hope this helps. I have a new book on eclipses, which
you'll find essential. It is called Eclipses, Predicting World Events &
Personal Transformation. My previous books, Predicting
Events with Astrology and Identifying
Planetary Triggers also contains information and
illustrations surrounding nodal activity. The latter book also contains a table
of nodal positions through 2054. For more info on this subject, link to The
Moon's Nodes. Best wishes, Celeste Teal
Is she bad luck, a temptress or something deeper?
Her mythology is intriguing and full of mystery. With more legend than
astrological information on Lilith, it’s time to investigate. Actually, there
are three Liliths; Black Moon Lilith, Dark Moon Lilith and Asteroid Lilith.
I’ve begun to keep an eye on Black Moon Lilith, tracking her movement
using Win Star
Plus. Not a body but a point of intersection similar to the Nodes, Lilith is
like a flickering shadow as she zig zags her way through the zodiac, retrograding
frequently. She moves several degrees a day but requires about nine months to travel
entirely through a sign.
In a moment of hindsight, I realized that the first day Lilith appeared
in name or symbol on the Moon Valley Astrologer website was on a Friday the 13th.
Probably a mere coincidence but could it be a first clue to her meaning? She
does seem to show some trouble and her symbol is red, like Mars.
Falling into her shadow can be a chilling experience, a
time of sacrifice or pain and revealing of some of the ironies and paradoxes in life.
Particularly key to relationship issues, she immediately took a telling
position in Chandra
Levy's chart.
by Celeste Teal
Spending about two and a half days in a sign, the Moon as
it travels rapidly through the zodiac, aspects every other planet by
conjunction, sextile, square, trine and opposition. Once it makes the last major
aspect to another planet from the sign it occupies, it becomes “Void of
Course” for the duration of time it remains in that sign.
Those familiar with Horary
Astrology have heard this terminology because in Horary, a Void of Course
Moon impedes a chart reading and it is the first Stricture
Against Judgment. A question formed within this time frame is devoid of
results or a definitive answer cannot be found. It indicates wavering in the
mind of the questioner or uncertainty surrounding the issue.
In our daily lives, the Void of Course Moon period tends to be a
less favorable time in which to carry out various business concerns or affairs
that require decisions and a practical frame of mind. Depending on the positions
the other planets occupy, the amount of time the Moon remains in this Void of
Course status is never the same. It may only be a few minutes or it can last a
couple of days.
In his essay that
appears in Secrets From a Stargazer's Notebook: Making Astrology Work for You
by Debbi Kempton-Smith, Copyright 1982 and 1999, published by Topquark Press,
Al H. Morrison who traced the effects of the Void of Course Moon from ancient
times to the present makes this observation of its effects:
“Decision making in such periods turns out later to be
unrealistic. Creativity diverges into unpleasant directions, improvisations,
false starts, error. Business moves fail to generate profits, or meet unexpected
difficulties.” (Quotes used by permission, Copyright 1982 and 1999, Debbi
Kempton-Smith.)
There are however, certain activities that can be carried
out with beneficial results during the Void of Course period. Some
are things we may be lacking in our weekly schedules anyway. As Al H. Morrison
also reveals, this time “is best used for subjective, spiritual, non-material
concerns like prayer, yoga, play, psychotherapy, or passive experience, sleep or
meditation.”
It is also an appropriate time for reading, listening to
music, watching a movie, taking a nap and other pleasurable activities.
Activities to avoid during the Void of Moon period include
important business meetings, new enterprises, elective surgery, submitting
proposals, negotiations, shopping for important items or making important
decisions.
Remembering the phrases “passive
experience” and “subjective concerns” in connection with the time the Moon
is Void, it is even an appropriate time to learn about your own horoscope – at
this time you are more open to discovering any blind spots you might have had.
Self-analysis of any kind is enhanced if carried out during
the Void of Course Moon period.
Actually, you are probably more sensitive to the Void of
Course Moon than you think. These are the mornings it’s hard to drag yourself
out of bed or you notice you’re having an especially difficult time feeling
motivated. Or, it’s the frustrating times during the workday that you say to
yourself; ok, what is going on here? Is it just me or is something strange going
on?

It’s only about every 18 months that Venus goes retrograde for
about 40 days. The next retrograde station of Venus begins March 6, 2009, where she
goes retrograde at 15º Aries. Moving backward into Pisces, Venus resumes forward
motion on April 17, 2009, at 29º Pisces.
Venus is rather like our happiness gauge. During its
backward motion we have the opportunity to take a deep look at what is making us
happy, whether it be relationships, situations, environment or “things”.
Throughout this process, keep in mind that Venus has to do
with attraction, affections, and objects of devotion. Venus connects to the
sentiments and since our sensitive side is more sensitive
than usual, it’s a good idea to
practice diplomacy and be gentle, especially with those you love. They are
likely to be the first target of your displeasure. Give others the benefit of
the doubt.
If the passions are aroused a
new relationship could form. In this case you might need to reevaluate how
precious your freedom is. In many cases, there’s a matter of a choice; giving
up one thing in order to have another. Incidentally, it’s a good time to
explore a new relationship but not a good time to wed. For some, the need to end
a relationship will be real and a wise choice, however, you should be wary of
the impulse for this Venus to act too quickly. Think it over carefully and if
you have the slightest inkling that you could be making a mistake, wait awhile.
We may be anxious to turn over a new leaf only to find later on that something
crucial is missing from the new page.
Ruling objects of beauty, art, décor, jewelry, etc. this
may not be the best time to make expensive purchases, but a time to de-clutter
and let go of things that are no longer a reflection of who you are. Look around
you; what about that old collection of ______from the 80’s? Does it still
bring you the pleasure it once did or have you outgrown it? Let it go and make
room to grow. You may not want to actually sell it until Venus turns direct if
it’s really valuable but you can spruce it up and get it ready – emotionally
detach.
Of course, there’s always the chance that something will
“happen to” some of our “stuff” that upsets us. We lose something, break
something, plans are cancelled, etc. If you find a way to use the energy of this
transit constructively, however, fewer of these incidents will occur.
Depending upon the house of your chart in which this
cycle takes place, something may come under issue for you to assess for its value in your life.
