Mundane Interpretations: An interpretation of
Astrology in terms of world trends, the destinies of nations and large groups of
individuals, based on an analysis of the effects of Equinoxes, Solstices, New
Moons, Eclipses, planetary conjunctions, and similar celestial phenomenon; as
distinguished from Natal astrology, specifically applicable to an individual
birth horoscope. Definition from De Vore's Encyclopedia
of Astrology.
The Moon Valley Astrologer monthly forecast is
based on the New Moon configurations and covers a four-week period. The chart is
set for Washington D.C., to show trends for the United States. In a
general way, many of the themes and activities shown in the New
Moon chart come to fruition at the time of the Full
Moon, harvest time. When a New or Full Moon is also an eclipse, the events
stemming from this dynamic lunation extend beyond the four-week period. My book,
Eclipses,
Predicting World Events & Personal Transformation fully explains
eclipses.
The
purpose of this column is to demonstrate some astrology at work. The intent is
not to use the column as a soapbox or to expound or promote any particular
viewpoint; only to showcase one of the many uses of astrology. Actually I try to
maintain detachment and simply study the New Moon chart to see what it suggests
the climate and tone will be like for the coming month. The New Moon chart reflects the true
State of the Nation. The chart never lies, although the astrologer can err in
reading it. Mundane astrology is a newer study of mine; it is a challenge,
different than reading a chart for an individual. In a Mundane chart, each house
takes on broader meaning and I am neither a financial or a political expert. In
any case, I try to keep a record of important events following each New Moon in
order to judge my accuracy and for follow up study. You are invited to
help me with this by emailing me newsworthy items that were suggested in the New
Moon Report, or notable events that were missed.
Each house in a mundane chart rules over the
same kinds of matters and people as in a natal chart, except that they take on
broader meaning. The First House in a natal chart shows the outlook and attitude
of an individual while in an mundane chart, it describes the outlook and attitude
of the nation. The Second House in a natal chart indicates the earning capacity
and spending habits based on values and priorities, and in a mundane chart this
house relates to the nations finances and economic matters.
The Third House in the natal chart rules communications, transportation,
neighbors. In a mundane chart the Third House rules the same things; all types
of communications and transport as well as relations with neighboring countries. The
Fourth House in a natal chart reflects the home, whereas in a mundane chart, it
reflects the homeland. And, so on and on.
The Aries Solar Ingress is the chart for the
moment the Sun enters Aries. This in the first day of Spring. That chart gives
an overview of the year to come and each subsequent New Moon chart can be read
with regard to the Ingress chart. Other
charts that come in handy when gathering testimony is the chart of the
United States and the natal chart of the President holding office. Below is President Bush's chart
and the USA chart. Click an image to view a chart and then use your back button.
The New Moon of July 2nd occurs
at 11 degrees of
Cancer, and in the chart cast for Washington, D.C., this New Moon falls in the 5th
house. This New Moon brings a spotlight to how families are faring, suggesting a
need for better organization and management in national domestic affairs.
New Moon in the 5th house brings
new developments, changes, and concerns revolving around 5th house
matters. This house governs children and their interests, their schools, and
education. The New Moon forms only wide aspects. While widely conjunct Venus,
the Sun, Moon and Venus are opposite Jupiter. Troubling questions or disputes
may bear upon schools or the education of children. Public excitement may be
focused here. There may be concerns about the ill treatment of children that
comes to light, or crimes or scandals against women or children.
The 5th house also rules places
of amusement, entertainment, sports, and pleasurable pursuits, as well as those
engaged in these occupations. Attention may be drawn here. Theaters and
amusements may suffer from losses or heavy expenses. People may not be inclined
to amusements. With Gemini on the cusp of the 5th and Mercury ruling
the house, the square of Mercury to Uranus suggests possible strikes by those
who work in 5th house related professions or other unexpected trouble
attaching to recreational activities. Betting, gambling, and speculation in the stock market are also
under the jurisdiction of the 5th house. Reforms may be implemented
or proposed in any of these 5th house matters with Saturn sextile the
Sun. (Click on image to view the chart, then use your back button.)
In Cancer, the sign of home and hearth, this
New Moon brings a focus to general living conditions and property matters.
Mercury is in the 4th house of land, property and agriculture.
Mercury’s square to Uranus suggests crop shortages, and that agricultural
matters are unfavorable. A theme that stands out is the troubling conditions
facing farmers, especially those with crops destroyed by the recent floods.
Venus in Cancer opposing Jupiter suggests the need for aid to them and for
families devastated by the floods. Mercury ruling the 8th house
suggests there may be discussion over sanitation.
With Mercury in the 4th house,
there are discussions and troubling questions attaching to 4th house
matters, including declining property values. Houses and property do not sell
well and building operations suffer. Matters to do with the land are adversely
affected. With Saturn in a wide sextile to the NM, new regulations may be
connected to building or mining. Weather is changeable. The weather, fires, and
other conditions affecting property and land may continue to cause problems with
Mercury ruling the 4th house and square Uranus. Dealing with such
problems may come to the forefront after the Full Moon.
Mercury’s aspects as well as Venus ruling
the 3rd house and afflicted, suggest troubles for the Post Office,
for railroads, in motoring and aviation, and for other services or businesses
connected to transport or to the dissemination of information. Such problems may
be more pronounced in mid month. In general money matters, trade and commerce
are disturbed and there are losses in revenue. There may be proposed legislation
dealing with money matters.
Venus is in the 6th house. This
is the house that rules the working classes, employment, and the health of the
nation, as well as the army, navy and civil services sectors. Venus forms a
close opposition to Jupiter, suggesting unemployment, and high expenditures in
military affairs. Aspects to Venus disturbs the well bring of the nation. Foods
are scarce. Families face problems. Jupiter emphasizes themes of discontent for
the working classes. Jupiter opposing Venus from the 12th house
indicates heavy expenses for public institutions and an increase of charity for
the needy. Some charitable institution may incur scandal.
Uranus rules and occupies the 1st
house while Neptune and Chiron falls
in the 1st house. This is the house of the people; the taxpayers and
voters. These planetary influences often disturb the peace and produces
agitation against the government. A cloud of confusion prevails, with
uncertainty in national and political affairs. There’s a mood of discontent
and people want reforms. With Neptune’s idealism supported by the North Node,
there is a spirit of comradery and an inclination to unite with others of a like
mind to bring changes and reforms that benefit common goals. Neptune’s aspects
are favorable for mass movements. This could be good for Barack Obama, although
there may still be some division or trouble within the party.
Neptune’s influences are favorable for the
spread of spiritualism. There may be new movements in art or music, and it’s a
favorable time for publications connected to spiritualism and mysticism with
Neptune trine Mercury.
Mars is in the 7th house of war
and peace. Saturn is also in the 7th house, in a critical
degree, and in conjunction with Mars. This could bring troublesome foreign
questions. Relations with another country may become strained or complicated.
Commercial affairs might be disturbed as a result. There may be disagreements or
contention. Border battles may be a piece of the picture. Things may not be all
bad since Pluto is trine Mars, though we will have to wait and see. Pluto in the
11th house suggests changes in the country’s alliances and possibly
friendlier terms may be established with a foreign power. But, neither Mars nor
Saturn in the 7th house is considered favorable, and neither is the
conjunction of these two planets, a major aspect this month. It often signifies
danger or violent events. In mundane astrology the aspect is associated with the
death or assassination of a prominent person.
Besides international affairs, the 7th
house also rules matters of a public nature, including national disputes,
suggesting an unsettled time at home. Since the 7th house rules
marriage and divorce, Mars and Saturn here may mean increased divorces and/or a
high profile divorce.
This New Moon shows plenty of situations
calling for solutions. While the mood is serious, it may become more so after
the Full Moon on the 18th. Discussions of national importance
increase after the Full Moon.
In your own chart, check the house
where this New Moon at 11 Cancer falls. The matters of this house will come
to the forefront. There are new developments here. The subject matters and
people ruled by this house will attract your attention and you see ways to
implement new strategies or initiate changes. Since Jupiter is in opposition to
the New Moon, an aspect that can mean over enthusiasm or taking on too much of a
commitment, this is something to be aware of although Saturn sextile the New
Moon helps to make a practical assessment of the situation. By mid month, around
the Full Moon, there may be a feeling of being pulled between devoting attention
and focus to home and family as opposed to putting energy toward vocational
matters. Try to find a way to balance these so that neither one is sacrificed.
Wishing you a safe and happy 4th of July, Celeste Teal 6/27/2008

The
New Moon of June 3rd occurs at 13°
of Gemini, an airy, changeable, busy sign. In the chart
cast for Washington, D.C., this New Moon falls in the 9th house. This
brings a focus to 9th house affairs, such as long distance travel and
communications. This house also has rule over higher education, science, and
invention. It rules shipping, immigration, religion and the courts. These are
areas of new developments and shows where attention will be drawn. The 9th
house is also informative about coastal conditions, and it links to publishing
and the media.
Mercury and Venus join the New Moon in the 9th
house, and with Gemini on the cusp, this suggests that travel and communications
are areas of increased activity and interest. Mercury
is retrograde, suggesting mishaps, technical malfunctions, accidents or
delays affecting travel and communications. Mercury is square Uranus, another
sign of potential problems in the area of aviation, air travel, or for those who
work or deal in these areas. There could be mergers, deals or agreements among
companies in the travel or communications industries. Pluto is in the 3rd
house and in an Aries Point
degree, also suggesting changes in connection with travel and
communications. In Capricorn, Pluto suggests transformations and reorganization
for big businesses or well-established companies.
Gemini on a house cusp represents multiples;
two or more issues of relevance that are linked to the matters of the house.
There are discussions and activities in commercial affairs. This may be related
to trade, imports and exports. There may be a visit to a foreign country by a
VIP. Prominent legal cases or religious issues may come up for discussion.
Disputes may be plentiful and much aired by the media. There is much personal
recrimination in the press with Mercury square Uranus.
There appears to be a very busy press in
general and some publication in particular that is getting a lot of public
notice. This may be in connection with the new book just released by former
press secretary Scott McClellan, who harshly criticizes his former boss,
President Bush. In speaking on mundane astrology, Ivy Jacobson points out that
the 9th house is the 12th house after the 10th,
the house of government secrets. Makes sense – this “tell all” book
reveals inside secrets. This NM Mercury is conjunct the U.S. Mars. This aspect
suggests debate and potential conflict and it is perfect planetary symbolism of
the former press secretary’s book (Mercury) that slams the Commander in Chief
(Mars) and false pretexts for going to war (Mars). There are other signatures in
the charts for Bush to be publicly criticized or to suffer a loss of dignity.
This comes mainly from Mars in the 10th house while in conjunction
with South Node.
In other areas, Jupiter is in the 4th house.
Even though Jupiter is retrograde and in its fall in Capricorn, it is a more
hopeful signature for 4th house affairs than in the recent past. This
should be a fairly positive sign for land values and for workers connected with
land, farming, building and agriculture. These areas may see signs of
improvement in June. It also signals better weather conditions across the
country, although all that planetary activity in the 9th house
suggests windy conditions along the coasts.
Jupiter
in the 4th house could also be good for the party out of power –
the Democrats. People want peace and rally behind those who promote peace. They
want someone in office that respects their values and their pocketbooks. There
is still a lot of political excitability but the party is closer to uniting
behind their nominee. There may be speculation as to whether Obama and Hillary
might run as a team. Look for news and decisions to be revealed after June 20th.
There may be some final shake-ups before matters are settled, especially for
surprising incidences surrounding Obama. It would be difficult for Clinton to
let go and hide her frustration and irritation if she’s left out in the cold.
Uranus is in the 6th house,
forming mixed aspects. It brings unexpected or sudden developments to the house
it occupies. This house rules employees and laborers, as well as the civil and
armed forces. There may be trouble in connection with the navy or worker
strikes. It also rules public health. There could
be health concerns linked to drugs or medications.
Mars is in the 10th house
although in conjunction with the South Node inside the 11th house
cusp. Mars’ influence will impact both houses. This may bring military matters
into focus and under discussion. Since Mars forms some nice aspects, especially
to the Sun and Moon, there may be some military victory or beneficial reforms in
connection with the military or war operations. On the other hand Mars in
conjunction with South Node is a troubling feature and it gets closer over the
coming two weeks. This could mean the death or sacrifice of a military man or
some person prominent in political circles might fall ill or die. Hostilities
might be directed toward a leader. This is a treacherous aspect, sure to bring
shocking events. Events are often along the lines of unforeseeable calamities or
natural disasters. Repercussions and developments linked to it may be most in
evidence around the time of the Full Moon in mid June, or just before or after.
As Mars comes into conjunction with the
South Node, it opposes Neptune and Chiron in the 5th house. This
occurs near the time of the Full Moon. This is a sinister mix, suggesting
criminal activities or murders. Crimes, assaults or hostilities may be directed
against people in high places. Crimes or abuse against women and children may
come to attention. There could be problems or accidents affecting schools or
places of amusement. All 5th house affairs are subject to confusion.
Neptune in the 5th house signifies an increase in speculation. Chiron
is in a critical degree while
conjunct the North Node, bringing excitability and volatility in the stock
market. Outer developments have an impact, causing ups and downs. Economic and
financial affairs may become complicated.
Overall, there are many pleasant aspects
leaning toward peace and agreement. There are feelings of good will, charitable
actions, and an urge to come together. There are increased engagements and
marriages. Pleasure and festivities
are increased. People are interested in literature. The curious thing is that
the rising degree is critical,
so it is a transitional period with stress and climax. Disquieting events may
bring people together.
The chart looks so benign on first glance.
It is the Mars factor and the many hard aspects from the planets in this chart
to the former Ingress chart that suggests brewing trouble. Mars also opposes the
February Solar Eclipse on June 10th, adding to an excitable month and
potential conflicts (see page 171 of Eclipses
for more info about this particular eclipse). An increase of startling events
around the globe may be noticed mid month.
In your own chart, check the house
where this New Moon at 13° Gemini
falls. The energy of the NM will stimulate those house affairs and turn your
attention in this direction. This is where you invest your energy. You see new
possibilities in connection with the matters signified by this house. You are
inspired to start new projects or arrangements in these house affairs or
involving the people signified by this house. Watch though for signs of
impulsiveness, impatience, or taking on too much around mid month. It may be
tempting to take on more than you can handle. Also be aware that Mercury
is retrograde until the 19th, a time when it’s usually more
productive to finish incomplete projects or do review work. There are many signs
of social interactions and a lighter air to this NM than in the recent past. It
may be a time to get together with friends or family, to find reasons to
celebrate, to call a truce or patch relationships that have been difficult in
the past. It may even be a good time to forge partnerships. It is just that
period around mid month when people are a bit more strained and prone to
contention, so that’s a time to tread lightly and remain aware of how your
actions and words impact others. Wishing you a safe, happy and prosperous month.

Throughout history, eclipses have been considered as very
powerful phenomenon and especially so in ancient times as they fell on important
places in the horoscopes of kings and countries. In those days, astronomy and
astrology were not divided and because religious and other ceremonies were set
to take place in accordance with the stars, priests were the acting astrologers.
In fact, it was only the very influential who had privy to the services of an
astrologer. Leaders ran their countries according to the information provided
and eclipses were noted to be of significance preceding famine, prosperity,
disease, war, and other broad-scale events affecting the multitudes. If an
eclipse occurred within a few degrees of the Sun, Moon, or Midheaven of a leader
or a country, they were regarded with much anticipation as reflective of coming
events well into the future.
Drawing
on information provided them by their astrologers, some leaders used this privy
knowledge to manipulate their subjects, instilling fear in the common people by
promising that a dragon would come to devour the Sun on a certain day and at a
certain time. Although impressed by his accurate vision of the future, people
came to be terrified of eclipses. Noisy ceremonies were performed, complete with
beating drums and shooting arrows, to chase away the evil dragon they believed
was trying to eat up the Sun.
Eclipses
occur when the Sun, Moon and Earth come into a straight line. With a Solar
Eclipse, the Moon casts a shadow upon the Sun as the Moon passes directly
between the Earth and Sun. The Moon eventually becomes contained within the
Sun’s disk and with a Total Solar Eclipse, there’s a narrow rim of sunlight
that is visible around the Moon during the totality of the eclipse. A Solar
Eclipse occurs when the New Moon forms within eighteen and a half degrees of one
of the Lunar Nodes. The motion of the nodes is about nineteen degrees per year
backward through the zodiac. Conditions are just right for Solar Eclipses to
occur during two time periods each year. Most years we have two Solar Eclipses,
as the Sun moves into the zodiac sign occupied by either the North or South
Node, however, some years there are more. A Solar Eclipse lasts on average
between three and four hours from the beginning to the end of the shadow phases.
These eclipses are considered to foreshadow events affecting nobles, leaders and
countries.
A
Lunar Eclipse occurs when the Full Moon forms within roughly twelve degrees of
the North or South Lunar Node. A Lunar Eclipse results from the Earth coming
directly between the Sun and Moon. The Moon loses its reflected light from the
Sun as the Earth interrupts it. Often the Moon appears to turn dark red while in
the Earth’s shadow. A Lunar Eclipse usually occurs two weeks before or two
weeks after a Solar Eclipse, however it is possible to have a Lunar Eclipse both
before and after a Solar Eclipse. In those instances we have a series of three
eclipses in a row, each two weeks apart. A Lunar Eclipse lasts an average of
four to five hours from beginning to end of the shadow phases. These eclipses
have long been believed to foreshadow events affecting the common people.
The
lunar nodes themselves, though nothing more than a point of intersection and not
planetary bodies at all, show a point for potentially dynamic activity. These
invisible nodes mark a point of magnetism, drawing upon the vibrations of other
nearby bodies to a powerful degree. The nodes in close contact to the Sun or
Moon are most relevant to earth’s inhabitants and the closer they fall to the
degree in which the Sun and Moon form their conjunction (New Moon) or opposition
(Full Moon), the more powerful the eclipse potential to presage events of
magnitude.
Stemming
from the ancient lore surrounding eclipses, the names Dragon’s Head and
Dragon’s Tail were given to differentiate the North and South Nodes. The North
Node is ascending, of a positive nature, while the South Node is descending and
receptive in nature. The North Node appears to bestow special strength and a
blessing, while the South Node reflects an area of potential vulnerability. The
North Node is all about getting and the South Node is all about giving.
In
a general way you can track the transiting North Node through your chart to find
the areas to focus your attention and energy that will result in some good
coming to you. This is an area of opportunity, where rewards, good fortune and
happiness can be found. By directing your efforts there, rewards easily come
forth. The house occupied by the transiting South Node indicates an area of
potential vulnerability, where you may be working through an issue, and where
you might experience some loss or make a sacrifice. Sometimes it means you have
a gift to share and the Universe expects something from you. Link
to more about the dynamic activity reflected by contacts of the Moon’s
Nodes.
Since
the transiting nodes indicate where eclipses will be forming, you can see ahead
of time what areas in your life and what relationships are due for change or
transformation. An eclipse always means that some amount of change is due, or
sometimes overdue. If one has neglected the matters, issues, or relationship
delegated to a house, then an eclipse of the South Node influence falling in
that house may bring a sort of crisis in order to turn things around and bring
things back into a healthier balance. On the other hand, an eclipse falling in a
house of the North Node influence may open new doors and present major life
changing opportunities.
When
an eclipse aligns closely with one of your planets, this is all the more
important and this is a very significant eclipse for you. The closer the eclipse
aligns with your natal planet, the more important it is. One of the most dynamic
places for an eclipse to occur is when it falls on your Sun. This happens if an
eclipse falls on or near your birthday. This ushers in an important year because
the Sun rules your very identity, your individuality and your sense of being a
unique person. The Sun also rules your vitality and your health to a large
degree. Since an eclipse automatically ushers in change and transformation, it
brings in a year of making important contacts and critical decisions, as one is
often gaining greater notice. While
there are several variables involved in interpreting this eclipse to see if it
will increase or decrease the recognition and admiration coming to you, it will
sometimes cause you to become a little accident-prone. With either this eclipse
or an eclipse falling exactly six months before or after your birthday (180 days
or close to it), it is important to guard your health and maintain your regular
check ups.
When
an eclipse falls on your Moon, your Venus, your Mars or any other planet, it is
very meaningful and the nature of the planet as well as its house position is
significant in determining the likely changes that you are entering into. It is
similar with an eclipse falling on your Ascendant or Midheaven. Also, each
eclipse can be one of four types. We have the North Node Solar Eclipse, the
South Node Solar Eclipse, the North Node Lunar Eclipse and the South Node Lunar
Eclipse. They are each unique and the kind of energy they imbue your planet with
is quite different, resulting in different kinds of experiences attached to
each. My book, Eclipses,
Predicting World Events & Personal Transformation,
explains all of this in detail and offers summaries of the kinds of experiences
coming due from an eclipse falling on any one of your planets or important
points. Check the Tutorial to find the house
meaning of an eclipse in your chart.
If one wants to be thorough in tracing personal eclipses in a
horoscope, the progressed places of the planets should also be considered.
Eclipses to these are also important. Learn more about Progressions.
In
the outside world and in our personal lives, an eclipse is a dynamic transit
that often coincides with important developments. An eclipse contains a
stimulating and excitable energy that is sometimes a bit destabilizing. Activity
often increases shortly following an eclipse or even prior to the eclipse in
some cases. This is why it’s recommended to hold off on making major life
altering changes or decisions around the time of an eclipse. The atmospheric
energy needs a little time to settle out. That way your new plan, project or
strategy has a better chance of stabilizing and working out in your favor.
Everyone feels the stimulation of an eclipse to some degree. For some it is
subtle while for others it can be quite intense. It can be enlightening to
simply observe the things going on around you at eclipse time. Sometimes a
relatively small incident gives clues to issues that will take on more
importance in the months to come.
The
degree of an eclipse remains hot for some time due to the influence of the nodal
factor that more or less turned a regular New Moon into a Super New Moon, or an
ordinary Full Moon into a Super Full Moon. That degree is prone to stimulation
from other transiting planets following the eclipse. The period of time that the
degree remains sensitive often lasts three years or more. So, an eclipse falling
on a natal planet supercharges that planet and it becomes quite sensitive to
transits for a good while. In other words, more major events may come about when
this natal eclipsed planet is transited by any other planetary body than if it
had not been eclipsed. Ideally, each transit should be monitored.
Transits
of Mars and Saturn were traditionally considered to be most notable as they
crossed an eclipsed degree. Mars stimulates and starts events connected with an
eclipse. Mars is quick on the draw,
often premature. Saturn consummates the eclipse conditions. Mars frequently
activates an eclipse shortly following the eclipse although Saturn’s transit
may come much later. Of course, ancient astrologers had no opportunity to
observe the transits of the outer planets as they crossed an eclipsed degree.
Research shows that each of the planetary transits can be traced to coincide
with spectacular events as they stimulate an active eclipse, just as Mars and
Saturn do. Learn more about Mars
Transits.
All
of this information can be found in my book; Eclipses,
Predicting World Events & Personal Transformation,
where
each eclipse through 2012 is listed and discussed and where an appendix gives
the transit dates of Mars, Jupiter, Saturn as well as the outer planets to each
eclipse. It is possible to make some amazingly accurate forecasts based only on
the eclipse factors influencing a horoscope when you know what to look for. I
would encourage astrologers at all levels everywhere to brush up on their skills
for interpreting eclipses. You’ll find things you wouldn’t otherwise find.
