Secondary Progressions furnish
the best starting point for finding the current trend in life through the close
aspects that have formed between the natal and progressed planets. This
technique employs the assumption that one day of planetary transits is equal to
a year of life. Simply put, if you wanted to find the trend in the life for
someone aged 20, you'd look up the planets positions for the 20th day after
birth.
Computer programs calculate
these easily and I use Win Star 2.0 to run a tri-wheel chart with the
natal chart in the center wheel, progressions in the middle wheel and transits in the outer
wheel. The progressions and transits are set for the location of the date in
question. I use the tropical zodiac and Placidus House System. By using the
tri-wheel, it's easy to see all the pertinent connections easily and one then
begins to list the active aspects.
The “active” aspects are those that have formed between
the natal and the progressed planets or points that are within a 1º orb;
slightly more for Sun and Moon. Usually, there are only a handful of active
aspects because the
progressing planets move very slowly. A summary of these aspects, plus
the stimulation of outer planet transits to active planets or points equals the
major trend or "road conditions" as I like to call them.
Close
aspects among the natal and progressed planets show how we’re utilizing our
natal potential and to where our previous efforts have brought us. When three or
more of the aspects agree in symbolic meaning, it shows that conditions are ripe
for a certain kind of event. See keys.
Transiting Mars and the Sun usually act as the timers for
events, at which time at least one outer planet will also be stimulating an
important place. The movement of the Moon's Nodes
will also frequently assist in timing major turning points. Go step by step
through Forecasting Tips to
set up and find the trend you are in.
My
books, Predicting
Events with Astrology and Identifying
Planetary Triggers, show how to prioritize the active aspects and how
to determine the area of life where events are likely to transpire. You can
read book reviews or see excerpts.
If you are past the beginner level but not quite to an intermediate level yet, a
book I would recommend is How
to Read Your Astrological Chart by Donna Cunningham. See reviews.
7-21-01 When I got the birth data for Chandra Levy
from Lois Rodden’s AstroDataBank,
I ran her progressions and transits for April 30th, the last
time she was seen. At the time, Chandra’s Uranus was rising to the
7:30 PM Ascendant for her location in DC. This can be used similarly to
horary astrology and although this summary is speculative, this
suggests that whatever took place next was very
much unexpected. The transiting Sun also opposed Uranus, emphasizing the
unexpected turn and sometimes
indicative of separations, sometimes indicative of slander or scandal.
In fact, these have another opposition that squares into them involving
Saturn and Neptune. Together
these form a grand cross and this shows a great deal of stress and
pressure that were present on both sides of a situation. The fact that
Uranus is part of the cross and first to rise suggests the sudden conflict
involved an older and/or wiser figure as indicated Saturn in her 12th house of secrets, and in
Leo; dash and glamour, winning smile.
Her natal trine of Venus to Saturn shows Chandra’s
proclivity toward having a relationship with an older man or authority type
figure and the aspect had recently become exact through progression,
showing when that birth potential would play out. Interestingly, her parents
have reportedly said she’s especially attracted to men of power or strong
personality – back to gray-haired and debonair Saturn in Leo trine
Venus. There’s more to that, but first…

In these configurations, we also see that her natal
Jupiter now conjuncts her Midheaven; suggesting both her approaching
Masters Degree and her current affluent position (from her way of seeing
it) with Gary Condit. She enjoyed the special attention. The hand of
authority (transiting Saturn) now falls on her natal Jupiter so
something threatens to take this away. That transit, accompanied by
several other configurations shows a heated scenario. Her natal Pluto to
Venus opposition has also now come together by progression to suggest a
powerful opponent to her romantic desires and needs; powerful as in
hurtful and physical. This opposition was however, part of her birth
make up and there are implications all through the charts of karma and
fate. Transiting Pluto is also actively involved in other hard angles to
her natal planets. It rides Neptune, ruler of her 8th house
of death, which nears her 5th house cusp (romance),
increasing the possibility that her disappearance and romance were connected.
With her Neptune so close to the 5th house cusp, it appears
Chandra was susceptible to being deceived in matters of romance. Neptune
also relates to the mystery of her fate and at precisely the last time
she was seen that evening of April 30th, the transiting
Vertex (destiny) locked into opposition with the Pluto-Neptune pair.
Beyond all of that, transiting Mars and Chiron are
transiting Chandra’s 5th house (romance). Mars is
masculine, angry and physical and Chiron is associated with wounding.
Before I go further, I should make note of a very
interesting configuration that might supply some details. Ms Levy has
Black Moon
Lilith (the temptress) on her Midheaven (professional arena) and in conjunction
with her Mercury (talk). Fame was something she was seeking and one way
to get it might be through a relationship with a politician. Her
enjoyment of the spotlight is also seen in her Leo Ascendant in which
the world is a stage. With Lilith and Mercury together, it is fairly
easy to believe the headlines one evening that referred to her command
for Condit to Leave His Wife! The combination of Lilith with Mercury can
show a tongue with poison arrows that arouses anger and retaliation in others.
Perhaps
there was no other way this could have gone. Not to say that whatever
punishment shouldn’t be dealt to her assailant if in fact enough proof
can be established to pinpoint one. Having been missing for two
months, it was when Ms. Levy’s Vertex (fate) caught the light of the
Lunar Eclipse of July 5th that attention was finally drawn to
the case. Unfortunately, there are watery influences in the chart suggesting
a possible drowning or that the best clues lie in or near a body of water. Implications of foul play are shown in Chandra's 8th and 4th houses.

connections between Chandra and Condit. Link to Lunations

At her passing on May 21st, 2000, Barbara
Cartland left a legacy for writers and to the world of publishing. Named the
queen of romance titles, Guinness accredited her with being the most prolific
writer alive when her 723 literary works had sold more than a billion books
worldwide.
In Ms. Cartlands natal chart, Saturn rules and resides on
her Capricorn Midheaven, accompanied by Jupiter. This illustrates the genuine
authority status she achieved in her lifetime and the honorable titles that were
bestowed upon her. In addition to her writing achievements, Queen Elizabeth made
her a Dame in 1991.
Born on July 9, 1901 in Birmingham, England, her progressed chart for May 21st, 2000,
allows one to learn many things about her life and her legacy as an author.

Calculating the progressions and transits of her demise, I
used the time of midnight because Ms. Cartland died in her sleep. Saturn was the
first natal planet to rise to the transiting Ascendant and progressed Saturn is
now within a one-degree orb to conjunct her natal Midheaven so these are also in
alignment with the transiting Ascendant. This Saturn emphasis suggests that she
has reached her height of authority and status; old father time is at hand and
limitations have been met. With Saturn ruling her Capricorn Midheaven and all
this activity, it resonates of the promise in her natal chart; to earn respect
as a true authority in a special capacity.
Cartland was born during a Jupiter/Saturn conjunction and
she passed with a Jupiter/Saturn conjunction. This illustrates the synchronicity
and flows of life that are evident in the planetary alignments of the progressed
and transiting configurations at the times of important events. Similar ties are
often found among the transiting planets as those in the natal chart when
crucial events take place.
The pairing of Jupiter and Saturn on her natal Midheaven
emphasized Ms. Cartland’s inclination toward conservatism and the serious
outlook she took in handling her business. Raised as the pampered darling of an
army major, she utilized all the resources at her disposal and was able to put
forth a product with lasting value, chiefly her long series of romance novels.
The Jupiter/Saturn conjunction shows that her professional
success was largely dependent upon such factors as industry and national
economics as indeed these did have an effect on the sales of her books.
Saturn rules big business and Jupiter rules the larger social and economic
trends. In Ms. Cartland’s chart, it was quite favorable to have Saturn leading
that conjunction. Although she worked hard, she began with a sound structural
basis for her projects that could later be expanded upon. Had Jupiter been
leading, she might have proceeded with over-optimism only to run into snags
later.
Her sixth house Mars reveals her ability to output so much
material. She was something of a workaholic as will frequently be noted by either Mars or
Pluto in the sixth house. For Ms. Cartland, this is a
complimentary position of Mars in Virgo to her earth sign Jupiter and Saturn.
This Mars position suggests that she was very energetic about her vocation. Her
self-esteem and confidence were greatly rewarded by her ability to complete a work and
complete it well. With practical intentions, she set about this in a methodical
fashion. Requiring an organized work environment, she would have been every bit
the perfectionist about her routine and schedule. She undoubtedly would have
expected similar efforts from others and would have had no use for any but the
most efficient employees.
This sixth house position of Mars also denotes her
practical yet strenuous approach to diet and fitness. A passionate follower of
healthy living, she was widely known for her belief in vitamins, supplements and
the importance of fitness for senior citizens. She was 98 when she passed in her
sleep, showing that her regimen worked splendidly for her.
Mars forms a close connection to Neptune in her third
house. This is most illustrative of her talent for weaving romantic fantasies;
always with an adventurous plot, a villain and a virtuous heroine. This theme is
seen in these planets themselves and artistic abilities are associated with this
aspect as Neptune inspires and Mars furnishes the fire and energy to bring that
inspiration into reality.
Mars shows the methods by which we reach out to maintain or
increase our individuality. Mars is also largely self-concerned but combined
with Neptune; there is also a need to remain fused with others while pursuing
individuality. These two planets don’t always see eye to eye because of the
dissimilarities in their natures. Although the square aspect between them
suggests some challenges, Ms. Cartland learned to be true to herself while
remaining fused with others. By tuning into the fantasies of ordinary people she
furnished them an escape from the ordinary and the joy of exaltation.
Through the artistic expression she chose as her outlet for
the Mars/Neptune energies, one also notices the benign manner of sexual
expression or absence of such in her novels. Her heroines were always virginal
and pure, emphasizing the correspondences between this aspect and puritanical
values. See more about Mars/Neptune
aspects.
Mysterious Neptune in her third house suggests the
fictional works she was most noted for and this is a key planet in her chart;
linking as it does to both Mars and her rising Moon. With Gemini residing on her
third house cusp, it reflects her multiple types of works as well as the sheer
number of works. Most widely known for the romance novels, she began her career
as a newspaper gossip columnist, and in addition to her fictional works, she
also wrote cookbooks, autobiographies, history, sociology, drama and verse. She
is acclaimed to have produced a novel a week with the aid of secretaries to whom
she dictated from her chaise lounge.
Neptune is also tied closely with her rising Moon in Aries.
She catered to the public’s needs in a most pioneering way through her
writing. Sensitive to the desires of the public, she took an enterprising
approach to deliver what they craved. With the Moon in sextile to Neptune, she
knew instinctively that an escape from routine would be appealing. See more on
these aspects at Sixth Sense.
This Moon/Neptune connection is also found at the time of
her passing in both the progressed and transiting configurations, reflecting the
timing of her transition as both natural and easy. Transiting Neptune is
conjunct her Part of Fortune while in trine to her progressed Moon, eliciting
the picture of this transition of consciousness. The Moon/Neptune sextile in her
natal chart plays out there in the progressed chart and again in the transiting
opposition of Moon and Neptune.
That her death was peaceful is indicated many times
throughout the chart. Her progressed Ascendant is trine her progressed Moon, so
she was ready for this transition. Transiting Pluto came to conjunct this
progressed Moon and trine the progressed Ascendant. Appropriately reflecting the
death transition, Pluto and progressed Moon are in the eighth and transiting
Mars opposes them while sextile the progressed Ascendant. Pluto is again
accentuated in the current sextile of her progressed Midheaven and progressed
Pluto. Progressed Mars has just come to the cusp of the eighth house and opposed
by the transiting Sun at the time of her death. Uranus is also part of these
configurations, lying within transiting Pluto’s rays in the eighth house. The
transiting Part of Fortune is conjunct her progressed Ascendant. Progressed
Venus is trine her natal Venus while both are contacted by transiting Neptune,
representing the ease and comfortable circumstances upon her transition to the
twilight realms.
The upcoming Solar
Eclipse at 10 degrees of Cancer would have conjoined Ms. Cartland’s fourth
house cusp of endings and this shows how events sometimes come prior to a
personally significant eclipse. Transits tend to precipitate the eclipse
conditions. This same eclipse also exactly opposes her progressed Saturn, the
most prominent planet in her chart and under the spotlight throughout the
progressed chart and transits. The eclipse would have fallen just shy of her 99th
birthday.
The transiting North Node had just come to a square to her
natal Moon near her Ascendant. The aspects of the Nodes will
often time turning points in the life.
The transiting Midheaven at the end of her life came to
conjunct her progressed Mercury with natal North Node. This very well depicts
her famous name as a writer and a prolific one at that. These aspects also
denote a time her name would be in the media. I would also watch for special
tributes to her in the coming weeks as that eclipse point is stimulated,
possibly by Mercury’s direct station at that point on July 17th.
The recent conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn occurred in
Taurus, forming a loose trine to her natal conjunction and a trine to her Mars.
Taurus is a fixed sign so there is an element of permanence. This duplicate
aspect tying in with her natal conjunction upon her passing sealed her legacy.
Indeed, Ms. Cartland will be forever remembered.

In a recent edition of Astrology Today, a
publication by the American Federation of Astrologers, was the birth data for
Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the pair of friends who went on a shooting
rampage at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado on April 20, 1999.
Killing or injuring dozens of fellow students, they then turned their
guns on themselves.
It's difficult to understand such a senseless tragedy as
the one at Columbine High, but numerous clues are found in Eric's progressed
chart for the day of April 20th. Maybe
as astrologers we could help prevent such things by seeing the network of
energies that might produce such an act by an individual.
In looking at the two charts, it appears evident which
young man was
the leader and which was the follower in the friendship and especially in the
tragic events that day. Eric Harris’ horoscope was full of hazardous potential
and it had been developing toward the darker side from an early age.
Looking first to his natal chart, we find both luminaries
afflicted; in fact the Moon is lacking any assisting aspects. Reflecting the
sense impressions, the overall aspects suggest a faulty link between the mind
and the senses. Stimuli from without were corrupted as they filtered through the
senses and before they reached the cognitive mind. This is most apparent in the
square between the Moon and Mercury, an aspect frequently noted in the charts of
those who’ve had some traumatic experience early in life; severe or unusual abuse for
example, in which a great deal of damage is done; prohibiting the later ability to
assimilate data accurately. It’s rather as if a fuse blows under the onslaught of
confusing stimuli. Due to the remaining aspects to this Moon and Mercury, the
potential for serious problems emerges in the overall picture.
Eric’s chart shows the Moon in square to both Jupiter and
Saturn and widely opposed to Neptune. These reflect mental confusion, dulled
senses and a lack of good moral fiber instilled during his formative years.
Because the Moon also signifies the mother, we might suppose that she was
somewhat impractical and nagging; possibly uneducated herself and not only unable to provide him with the
nurture he needed but maybe contributing to the negative development of his
potential. Overall, his relationships with women were not good and he was
unpopular in general as signified by the aspects. Link for more
on the Moon's aspects in a chart.
In noting the remaining aspects to Mercury, governing the
mind, dire warnings continues to emerge. Second only to the Moon in sensitivity
to the planetary aspects it receives and already involved in the critical
affliction to the Moon, Mercury is also opposite Jupiter and Saturn. These
suggest pretentiousness, bad judgment, evasiveness or lying as well as mental
depression, fearfulness, negativity and dark thoughts.
The range of aspects also implies difficulty in speaking or a speech impediment to the point that on
occasion he could become completely unable to speak. A little later, when we
look to the progressions and
transits of April 20th, you’ll notice the replication of the
Moon and Mercury in their transits (recent returns), reestablishing that natal
square and indicating the probability that this Moon/Mercury conflict was a
root source of Eric’s overwhelming emotional and mental problems. Such a
configuration with attending corroboration might be associated with
"lunacy". For more on Mercury, link to Planetary
Keywords.
The potential for destruction, risk taking and criminality
are found in the next set of aspects most prominent in Eric’s chart. The
personal planets, Sun, Venus and Mars lie in the 5th house in
opposition to Pluto, ruler of the chart. Stress to a 5th house Sun is felt at a very intense
level. Both the Sun and the 5th house rule the expression of the ego
and blocks to this expression can be so inwardly frustrating as to provoke drastic
solutions.
In breaking down the aspects to these 5th house
planets, Pluto’s opposition to the Sun indicates a love of glory, an
overbearing nature and a tendency to force circumstances. It also shows daring
actions and an inaccurate estimate of personal capabilities. The opposition of
Pluto to Venus shows a course nature, uncontrollable passions and
disappointments in love due to a dictatorial attitude. This aspect has been
linked to cases of suicide stemming from unreciprocated affections. A key
aspect in Eric's horoscope, it is most prominent in the progressed chart and in the
transiting skies at the
time of the Columbine shootings.
Mars close position to the afflicted Sun and Venus in
the martial sign of Aries lends great force to a destructive ego
nature. The opposition of Mars and Pluto is quite treacherous; often prominent
in the charts of those who commit criminal acts and in the charts of those who
die violent deaths. It is an aspect that reflects a test on the evolutionary
path to determine whether the personal nature or the spiritual nature is the
stronger force. The actions of these individuals have far reaching consequences,
both for themselves and others.
Having examined the natal chart and found the roots of criminal
behavior, we move on to Eric’s progressions and transits for the day of April
20, 1999 in Littleton, Colorado.
As outlined in Predicting Events with Astrology,
and discussed in Identifying
Planetary Triggers,
there must be at least three similar configurations to produce an event. This
stipulation has been more than accounted for in the natal chart and now must be
found in the current environmental conditions. As is often the case in rash
events, an unusual amount of stimulation is found in the transits, showing that
current environmental and experiential factors were especially aggravating. With
the current progressions providing an outlet for the natal potential, they were
lethal....
The progressed aspects that have come into active orb
include progressed Jupiter on the progressed Midheaven; this of course an
afflicted Jupiter, bringing into the limelight the culmination of a grandiose
scheme that has long been forming. With the stressful aspects of Jupiter to Moon
and Mercury still within a one degree orb, the deficiency of moral fiber and
disturbing elements of the psyche have a place to come home to roost. With
Jupiter urging expansion, an inability to gain the recognition he felt he
deserved would be taken by force and the events that took place show the extreme
wastefulness of an afflicted Jupiter.
Notice also that the progressed Midheaven has brought natal
Mercury onto an angle. Along with giving all that mental confusion an outlet,
these angular Mercury’s are often prominent when one’s name appears in the
headlines through media coverage.
The progressed Ascendant, attended by transiting Pluto, has
come to square the natal Midheaven. At the same time progressed Pluto has come
into active orb of opposition to natal Venus. This particular aspect is quite significant and reveals the
major underlying factors at work. A key aspect, it appears in all three charts; the
natal chart, the progressed chart, and the transiting chart. For Eric, the extreme conflict between he and others is met with
his most dictatorial and destructive proclivities. Pluto rules the chart and
Venus rules the 7th and 11th houses. See note
below.
Even though the Pluto opposition to Venus is the key aspect,
look at the remaining transiting features. Two of the aspects I refer to as Red
Flag aspects are nearly exact; transiting Saturn conjunct the
progressed Sun and transiting Uranus conjunct the progressed Moon. Either of the
progressed luminaries in hard aspect to transiting Saturn or Uranus can be quite
problematic. Eric had both. Transiting Saturn was also conjunct progressed Mars
(see more on this aspect in the Tutorial under Planetary
Keywords) and
transiting Mars was in opposition to the whole grouping of progressed planets in
unmovable Taurus. Transiting Jupiter was conjunct natal Mars, urging the implementation of
aggressive action and disregard for the consequences.
This is only a partial summary of the chart for the time of
the noted event and many other features could be expounded upon. Notice that
both the transiting Moon and transiting Mercury are in their natal positions and
duplicating the square from the birth chart. Even the transiting Midheaven falls upon the natal
and transiting Mercury to show the time Eric would finally get his
"recognition".
Transits of the outer planets are most important in the
science of prediction and are always appropriately in
place to signify the major events in life. You can learn more about an
aspect called Saturn Chasing the Moon by linking to Special
Points. It is another aspect involving a transiting planet to a progressed
luminary, that denotes difficulties .
Note: Not wanting further information
than what I remembered, after I did this reading, I
searched for info about Eric on the net. According to a biography on Eric he'd
previously faked his suicide when a girlfriend broke up with him.
He had also been on the psychiatric medication, Luvox, for
depression and obsessive/compulsive disorder. He'd just been
rejected from entering the Marine Corps, a
6th and 11th house subject and highly illustrative
of the Aries theme in his chart. The reason for the rejection was the medication
he was on and he’d reportedly quit taking it just a
few days before the tragic events at Columbine High. Link to the Biography.
All the tips for sorting, prioritizing and tallying the
active aspects in the progressed chart and transits are detailed
in my books, Identifying
Planetary Triggers and Predicting Events with Astrology.
